For God hath not given us the spirit of fear" (it was what Timothy was manifesting), "but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. And if you align your life with God, you're going to find yourself out of alignment with the world and persecution will come. Verse 2 Timothy 3:1. Men would become lovers of money (philarguros, G5366) . Now, it is doubtless as true as it ever was, that a man who will live as the Saviour did, will, like him, be subjected to some such injury or disadvantage. Closely allied with the braggart, but--as we shall see--even worse, is the man who is arrogant. The cause of the perilous times are found in the things that people will be doing, and at the top of the list. In 2 Timothy 3:13 he meant that evil becomes more intensive as time goes on. And that quality of conquering endurance is necessary, because persecution is an essential part of the experience of an apostle. They will follow after their own wicked devices. Assuredly he would rejoice to scare Timothy from the field of serving Christ, and would shrink from no means to secure it. But yet it is absolutely unavoidable that all of them shall have the world for their enemy in some form or other, that their faith may be tried and their steadfastness proved; for Satan, who is the continual enemy of Christ, will never suffer any one to be at peace during his whole life; and there will always be wicked men that are thorns in our sides. In the Jewish pictures of these last terrible times we get exactly the same kind of picture as we get here. The Christian leader will never lack his opponents. Given the right conditions, such oppositions would be just as deadly as the great Roman persecutions. There is training. First, there are the duties of an apostle. It may flourish for a time, but when it is exposed to the light of truth it is bound to shrivel and die. This is unfortunate, since his works contain priceless gems of information that are found nowhere except in the ancient writings of the Jews. I think we've gone just about as far as we can. At any rate the apostle presses this very strongly on Timothy. The apostle mentions the Lord's delivering him out of them all, for Timothy's and our encouragement under sufferings. Timothy's job, for the sake of the future, involves more preservation than innovation. It is still possible for a teacher to gain an undue and unhealthy influence over others, especially when they are impressionable. The age of children is the learning age; and those who would get true learning must get it out of the scriptures. Here he mentions his persecutions and afflictions at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra, besides what he suffered elsewhere. What Does It Mean That There Is No One Holy Like God? That's just fable. In the last days there would come times which would menace the very existence of the Christian Church and of goodness itself, a kind of last tremendous assault of evil before its final defeat. This statement does not contradict what Paul said in 2 Timothy 3:9. "Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry." Deliberately he lit it. "Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the Lord delivereth him out of them all" ( Psalms 34:19 ). Jewish thought had one basic conception. Certain of the temporary persecution, he is equally certain of the ultimate glory. Persecution and hardships will come, but of two things Paul is sure. Practical Bible study on 2 Timothy 1. The whole idea is that of thoroughly fitting you as an instrument that God can use. It will be getting better a little further down the road, but evil days are going to wax worse and worse, until the Lord takes His church out and then God judges the world for its unrighteousness and ungodliness.
