RM: The Starship rhythm section is really solid. Many great drummers use them, both in studio and live. RM: I was listening to your Starship recordings, and then I listened to the records you did with Zappa ten years ago I notice that you play a lot of notes with Zappa. Rock journeyman Aynsley Dunbar has proven himself one of the finest drummers in the business for over twenty years, whether as a member of several bands or as a session musician. What I thought I had to be? The way I play is based on feeling-not on something I've been told to do. So I find it better to listen to what is being played on the top and then react to that. I dont want to be in the band anymore. Like I said, using it can cause the problem. Id be comin off it, and probably didnt know that I was probably just jonesing for a drink. Are you not allowed to talk about him on the record? Reviewers can curse about them and reconstruct their ideas about them or give you a lousy write up, but as long as the solo went down well that night, you can't believe anything a critic says. AD: The only times we would actually play together was maybe when she would be playing vibes. I was always on the edge of being what I expected out of myself, and what people wanted me to be, and I never wanted to settle for anything short of what it should be. I have four 19" crash cymbals, a 21" swish on the left and a 21" Chinese on the right, and a 22" Earth ride cymbal. I sat in the balcony and had Peter Green and John McVie with him. And then the day after, I was at the airport, and youd think we had a hit single again. I wanna let go. And Im sure they thought, Oh, there he goes. Oh he is one of my favorite drummers on the planet. It ends up costing an absolute fortune. We didnt go nowhere near the disco thing. Giving me high fives. While all of that was going on, Zappa came to town and left a message for me to talk to him. I said, Im gonna get it done. Ive tried to talk him out of it, but he wants to do it. And then he did his second one, and I said OK, look, if he does a second one, Im probably going to end up doing one. Then [drummer] Steve Smith wanted to do a jazz record. And so[sigh]Ive tried to maintain that thats just not what theyre for. I just kept my eyes on him all evening. But nothing really got any hotter. And Jon saidor Neal, I cant remember, it was so long agoOkay, well take some time off. And I said, You dont understand. RM: What set-up are you using these days? I never had much chance to practice them at home. We can all play crush rolls around the drum kit, and play every note possible in a drum fill, but it will just sound like mush to the average person. I'd like to know what pedal he used. AD: I picked up a feel for it by watching drummers, looking in books and practicing it. I was taken to London by the Mojos. Its been a love-hate thing. But that can make you perspire too much and you can get cramps from the lack of salt. Theyd play amazing chord changes, and wed all try to navigate and try to help us be great with each other, and when we were done, Jon and I would take just, empty tracks, with the melodies in my head, to his house, and I would sit there at the coffee table and sing the melodies, and we would skull out lyrics. It was a nightly thing for me when I was on tour. We came off the road for several months to work in the studio, and I thought maybe I should try some other way to keep myself feeling fit, because I was feeling tired and weird all of the time.
